MINNEAPOLIS, MN – There’s cold, and then there’s COLD, like -12 degrees wind chill cold. and Minneapolis/ St Paul, Minnesota has a special kind of cold. That’s why the USMNT decided to schedule their next CONCACAF World Cup Qualifier aghast Honduras to be played here.
The frigid temps at Allianz Stadium in St Paul Minnesota proved to be the perfect site to freeze out the tropical Hundiuran team for the final match of this round of the qualifiers.
The win was a relief for the US, as they struggled for a 1-0 win against El Salvador followed by an unremarkable 0-3 lost to team Canada. The Americans started tis game with vigor and a lot of hunger to score.
On the match, the USA took 16 shots, with 8 on target. The held posession of the ball 77% of the time, and more than doubled the number of passes sent by Honduras.
Team USA got the scoring going early when Weston McKennie got lost in the box and sent one through past Honduran Goalkeeper Luis Lopez. The US scored again in the 37th minute, when Walker Zimmerman sent one in , and finally Christian Pulisic scored a goal in the 67’s after a corner kick was deflected in the box.
“It was a great performance from the team today to get a really important three points,” Pulisic said. “It was my job to come in and make a difference, and I’m glad I could do that.”
The result kept the U.S. in second place of CONCACAF’s octagonal round of qualifying and still trails Canada, who beat El Salvador later on Wednesday, by four points. The Americans are level on points with third-placed Mexico but ahead on goal difference after El Tri’s win against in the day’s last CONCACAF qualifying match..
