Candidates for Song of the summer 2015

We do not if its the heat or the sense of freedom that makes us crave music but summer is a time for tunes. Since 1985 Billboard has kept track of the most popular songs of the summer and has awarded one song per year with the coveted “Song of the Summer” title. Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” was 2014’s winner. Who will take the title this year?

 

 

1.) “Bright,” Echosmith

“Bright” is the biggest hit from the indie pop band Echosmith since the 2013 release of Cool Kids. The dreamy guitar ballad is perfect for both a summer fling and a night watching fire works with friends.

Most Memorable Lyrics: I think the universe is on my side. Heaven and earth have finally aligned. Days are good and that’s the way it should be.

2.) “Fun,” Pitbull featuring Chris Brown.

Heat up a warm summer night dancing to this hot song. The Funky upbeat pop song evokes the disco vibe of the 1970’s, Chris Brown and Pitbull mix a vintage baseline with contemporary drum riffs to make “Fun” is an instant hit. Oh, feeling crazy.

Most Memorable Lyrics: The Moon is up, the night is hazy. Let’s get lost in the shadows. Somewhere no one else can find

3.) “Like I Can,” Sam Smith

“ Like I Can” is another hit for English singer/songwriter Sam Smith. This new song differs from the ballad singer’s signature style. It is upbeat inspirational and fun. Still the sound is uniquely soulful

Most Memorable Lyrics: Baby he’s a mantra, keeps your mind entranced. He could be the silence in this mayhem, but then again…

4.) “The Night Is Still Young” Nicki Minaj

Just one of Nicki Minaj’s many hits on the Bilboard hot 100 list, “The Night is Still Young” is a slowed down party anthem that will give you the drive to keep dancing long after your feet are begging you to stop.

Summer Mantra: This what you came for. You get what you buy. This is what you paid for. So Make sure the stars is what you aim for. Make mistakes though. This what you came for.

5.) “Post to Be,” Omarion featuring Chris Brown & Jhene Aiko

Jam packed with star power “Post to Be” boasts the talents of Chris Brown, Omarion of B2K fame, and newby Jhene Aiko .The quintessential smash rap song it is catchy and flashy.

Most Memorable Lyric: That’s how its post to be, everything good like it post to be

6.) “Dear Future Husband,” Meghan Trainor

Bluesy, soulful and true to Meghan Trainor’s style “Dear Future Husband” is that signature brand of cute bubblegum pop that reminds us of doo-whop but incorporates modern touches.

Most Memorable Lyric: You gotta know how to treat me like a lady. Even when I’m acting crazy. Tell me everything’s alright.

7.) “This Summer’s Gonna Hurt,” Maroon 5

Unlike other songs written in anticipation of this time of year that glamorize summer love Maroon 5’s “This Summer’s Gonna Hurt” knows that summer love is seasonal and will inevitably end.

Most Memorable Lyric: Has to have it all. Chase every star.

8). “Honey, I’m Good.” Andy Grammer

An upbeat love song about staying true to the one you’re with, it doesn’t exactly fit with the spirit summer but simplistic beats matched with the quirky melody and have made for a fan favorite.

Most Memorable Lyric: No, honey I’m good. I could have another but I probably should not.

10.) “Shut Up and Dance,” Walk the Moon

An 80’s themed throwback in a modern era Walk the Moon’s “Shut up and Dance” is totally 80’s but the happy go lucky music behind the energizing lyrics makes it feel right at home in the 21st century.

Most Memorable Lyric: She took my arm. I don’t know how it happened. We took the floor and she said. “Oh don’t you dare look back. Just keep your eyes on me.” I said, “Youre holding back.” She said “shut up and dance with me.”

11.) Want to Want Me,” Jason Derulo

A change from Jason Derulo’s strictly hip hop songs “Want to Want Me” clearly has influences in rock. Addictive and imaginative this cross genre masterpiece is slowly climbing the charts.

Most Memorable Lyric:There’s nothin’, no, I wouldn’t do, I wouldn’t do, just to get up next to you.
