A-Rod Rejects Marlins Offer. Not Playing in 2016

arod16Former slugger Alex Rodriguez put to rest rumors today of a return to baseball in 2016.

The possibility of Rodriguez playing this year seemed more possible when Marlins team president Michael Hill said Sunday they would consider any available player in the wake of a season-ending injury to Giancarlo Stanton.

With Miami being his hometown, it seemed like a reasonable possibility.

During Rodriguez’ farewell speech, he never mentioned “retirement”, so it was assumed he left the window open for a possible return. But Rodriguez issued a statement through his spokesman today to put an end to the rumors.

“I want to put all this talk to rest about Alex playing for any team this season,” said Ron Berkowitz, Rodriguez’s spokesman, on Monday.

“It’s not happening. Like he said Friday night, he is happy and he is going to take some time to relax and hang with his family and friends.”

The Yankees have said they will not stand in Rodriguez’s way if he wants to play again, even after owner Hal Steinbrenner offered him a special adviser role.
