Carmello Anthony Verbally Commits to the Houston Rockets

Basketball star Carmelo Anthony verbally committed to sign with the Houston Rockets according to Yahoo Sports.

Anthony was traded earlier this off-season to the Atlanta Hawks who waived him soon after. Anthony cleared waivers last week and according to many sources, he was expected to join the Rockets.

From Sham Charania of The Vertical at Yahoo Sports tweeted today that a verbal agreement was in place for Houston, who is trying to fill some holes in its once nearly perfect roster from last season.

Defensive stalwart Trevor Ariza signed with the Phoenix Suns  in the offseason, and big man Luke  Mba a Moute landed with the Los Angeles Clippers, both losses weakened Houston’s defense.

Houston is scrambling to fill the holes, and though Anthony is not known for his defense, he can add some offensive firepower. The Rockets also added Michael Carter Williams to help fill the holes.

The Rockets prioritized Anthony, and the 10-time All-Star worked out repeatedly with Houston stars James Harden and Chris Paul this summer. Houston center Nene is pumped about Mellow’s agreement. The two played together in Denver, so team chemistry might not be an issue next year.

Anthony averaged a career-low 16.2 points and 5.8 rebounds in 78 games for the Thunder last season. Oklahoma City acquired Anthony in a trade with the New York Knicks on the eve of training camp last September.

In 15 seasons with Denver, New York and Oklahoma City, Anthony has averaged 24.1 points, 6.5 rebounds and three assists.
