The 2016 Golden Globe Nominations were announced today with the motion picture “Carol” picking up five nominations, leading the pack. The picture received a nod for Best Picture, Best Director Todd Haynes, nods for both of its stars, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara as well as a not for Best Score.
“The Revenant,” “Steve Jobs,” and “The Big Short” were close behind with four nods. “American Crime,” “Fargo,” “Mr. Robot,” “Outlander” and “Transparent” were among the TV shows that received three nominations.
Other notable nominations include Bryan Cranston (“Trumbo”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), Michael Fassbender “Steve Jobs”, and Will Smith “Concussion” all vie for The Best Actor nod in a Motion Picture Dama, Jennifer Lawrence (“Joy), and Amy Schemer “Trainwreck” are in contention for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy, and Sylvester Stallone (“Creed), for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.
Lady Gaga, receiving her first nod, was nominated for FX’s “American Horror Story: Hotel,” which was also nominated for best TV miniseries. On an unusual note, The Matt Damon vehicle “The Martian” is nominated under Best Picture Comedy or Musical. ??

Films such as “Spotlight” and “Carol” have done well with critics groups, but the Screen Actors Guild stunned prognosticators by ignoring major contenders such as Will Smith (“Concussion”), Jennifer Lawrence (“Joy”) and Michael Keaton (“Spotlight”) in favor of performers such as Sarah Silverman (“I Smile Back”) and Helen Mirren (“Woman in Gold”), who were not expected to factor into the major awards.
The Golden Globes will be hosted by controversial comedian Ricky Gervais and will be telecast on Jan. 10.
