‘Star Wars: The High Republic’: Disney announces new saga

A quote from “A New Hope” has inspired the franchise’s freshest saga, “Star Wars: The High Republic.”

“For over a thousand generations the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice,” Obi-Wan Kenobe says in the 1977 film that began it all. Now, a new series of comics, children’s books and novels will explore that era in the Galactic Republic, Lucasfilm announced late Monday.

“A line that we’ve been hearing since 1977 and we thought, you know, what does that look like?” Michael Siglain, Lucasfilm’s director, says in an announcement trailer.

It’s 200 years before “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace,” the Galactic Republic is thriving and justice reigns in “The High Republic” — but a “frightening new adversary threatens,” according to the trailer, which has racked up more than 600,000 views as of Tuesday morning.

The saga, previously referred to as “Project Luminous,” features new stories from five authors, all set in the galaxy a long, long time ago. Lucasfilm put together a writers room of “Star Wars” fans and authors, allowing authors to imaginatively continue the “Star Wars” galaxy.

“We’re finding ourselves at a very exciting moment with the Skywalker saga coming to an end. We’re at a place of, what’s next for ‘Star Wars’?” says James Waugh, Lucasfilm’s VP of strategy.
