Orlando Magic Improve, But Mistakes Cause Losses

The Orlando Magic have shown improvement on the court so far this season, especially on defense. However, their mistakes and inconsistency are costing them wins. The Magic travelled to Washington DC to play against the Wizards on Saturday night and though they had a strong defensive effort, the team had sections of the mage where they over dribbled, lost focus and ball movement, and eventually lost the game 108-99. The Magic have had a difficult early-season schedule that included two games against the Wizards and matchups against the Oklahoma City Thunder, New Orleans Pelicans, Houston Rockets and Toronto Raptors. The Magic also have played one stretch of five games in seven nights.

But the Magic have looked good in these games, forcing double overtime against OKC, and even pulling out a win against struggling New Orleans. They have shown that they have the ability to compete at this level, but have come up short at the end of games.

Injuries to Victor Oladipo, Nic Vucevic, and Elfred Peyton battling injuries has not made things easy. Scott Skiles and staff are battling bad habits from last year as well as the lack of a go-to player to pull them out of these doldrums. John Wall, Russell Westbrook, and James Harden have been able to hold their teams up during difficult stretches, but the Magic don’t seem to have that component.

It’s going to take teamwork, and they are still getting used to Skiles system and meticulous ways. 11 games in, the have a 5-6 record. We’ll see how a few day’s practice this week helps the team against Minnesota on Wednesday night.
